Humanism was one of the greatest cultural
movements of the Renaissance. It pretty much transformed education and all
that it concentrated on. For example, by the 14th century more manuscripts
of literature and philosophy were beginning to become more available in
western Europe. This model of education focused on grammar, literature,
history and philosophy unlike the old style of education, that mainly
focused on logic and the Bible. And soon enough the people that followed
and believed this system of education became known as humanists.
The idea and concept of humanism really affected things socially
during the Renaissance. It did because it basically changed they way an
education was looked at and the way it was provided.
This artifact is The Book
of the Courtier. This book was a required reading in order to become a
Renaissance man. The Book of Courtier was written by Baldassare
Casrtiglione and it was all about the correct behavior of men and women of
this period. The goal of the men was to eventually become a Renaissance
man. This would most likely happen by being able to participate in
athletics, playing an instrument, dance and being able to have good
conversation with anyone. Basically, the men had to be well rounded and
talented in many ways. But they had to make all their talents and deeds
look effortless.
The Book of the Courtier definitely affected the Renaissance
economically and socially. It pretty much changed the way of life for men
and women of this time. For example, the Courtier encouraged women to be
with their husband and their husband only. This socially changed the way
men and women were looked at.
Economically, The Courtier helped to make the Renaissance more successful
and creative in more than one way.
The start of a major call for reform began in the 16th century when the
Roman Catholic Church had become very powerful. But the call for
reformation by Martin Luther was just the beginning of grievances against
the Catholic Church. Luther was quickly backed up by followers known as
Lutherans. They were either following because they really believed Luther's
ideas of the Reformation or because it provided them with many privileges
that were, at one point, reserved for the church.
